Exams and cleanings

A routine visit for adults and children who want their teeth and gums checked and cleaned. It is also where Dr. Bolden decides, with you, whether anything needs treatment.

What happens

The visit, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: Talk first

You say what has changed since your last visit, and what worries you.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Cleaning

Munira removes plaque and tartar and shows you where your brushing is missing.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Exam

Dr. Bolden checks teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, and orders X-rays only if she needs them.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The plan

You leave knowing what, if anything, comes next and what it would cost in writing.

Good to know

Comfort, alternatives, risks and billing

  • Comfort

A cleaning rarely needs numbing. If your gums are tender, say so and we'll go slowly or stop. We'll numb a small area if the cleaning needs it.

  • Other choices, and waiting

Visits can be spaced differently, and Dr. Bolden sets how often from what she sees. Putting off cleanings lets tartar build up, which can lead to gum disease that is harder to treat.

  • Risks and after-care

Gums can be sore or bleed a little after a deep cleaning. We tell you what to expect and what to do, and the office phone is there if it gets worse.

  • How it's billed

Exams, cleanings and X-rays are each quoted as their own fee, in writing, before the visit.

Questions about exams and cleanings

How often do I need a cleaning?

The dentist decides from what she sees. For some people it is twice a year, for others more or less often.

How often are X-rays taken?

When Dr. Bolden needs them to see something she can't see by looking. She tells you why before they are taken.

What is a deep cleaning?

Cleaning below the gumline when tartar has built up there. It is done in more than one visit when needed, with numbing for comfort.
